Job Hazard Analysis Process Implementation

To implement use of the Job Hazard Analysis as a process, a thorough review of the workplace is necessary. By completing a comprehensive hazard and risk assessment, priorities can be set for rank ordering jobs and tasks by potential severity and loss frequency.  Consider the following:

1. Do you a clear understanding of what the implementation of a job hazard analysis process will accomplish? Is a formal business case necessary to assure you have the necessary buy-in for time and budget as warranted?

2. How will you involve employees with hazard identification and hazard analysis? What actions and administrative involvement will be needed to increase or modify employee involvement? What obstacles could prevent employees from participating? Can time be allocated for involvement or must you build involvement into the job for daily use? What training will be needed for hazard identification? Who will do it?

OSHA I2P2 Standard - Injury and Illness Prevention Program

OSHA is considering all input in drafting the proposed rule but has stated that an I2P2 rule would include the following elements:

  • Management duties (including items such as establishing a policy, setting goals, planning and allocating resources, and assigning and communicating roles and responsibilities)
  • Employee participation (including items such as involving employees in establishing, maintaining and evaluating the program, employee access to safety and health information, and employee role in incident investigations)
  • Hazard identification and assessment (including items such as what hazards must be identified, information gathering, workplace inspections, incident investigations, hazards associated with changes in the workplace, emergency hazards, hazard assessment and prioritization, and hazard identification tools)
  • Hazard prevention and control (including items such as what hazards must be controlled, hazard control priorities, and the effectiveness of the controls)
  • Education and training (including items such as content of training, relationship to other OSHA training requirements, and periodic training)
  • Program evaluation and improvement (including items such as monitoring performance, correcting program deficiencies, and improving program performance).”
